| From January 18th, 2003 through January 19th,
2003, Michael and Terese went to Las Vegas to atend a book signing at the WHitney Library,
visit with other elephant collectors and take pictures of their ellies for an upcoming
volume of the Everything Elephants Encyclopedia, and look around town for elephant
things! This a a short report of that trip. Friday, 1/17/03:
Terese and I left Phoenix Arizona at about 6am and arrived at the Sahara Hotel
about 11 (actually took about 6 hours due to the time zone change).
Upon checking into our room, I noticed a loud humming sound in the room. Some kind
of equipment was near our window. I knew I would not be able to sleep, so I called and
requested a new room, and Shara was very accomodating. We moved to oour new room and
lo and behold, it had two pictures of elephants (which our first room did not!) Here
is one of them--->>>
Saturday, 1/18/03:
Saturday was the day of the book signing at the Whitney library on Tropicana Ave.
Terese and I got there an hour early to set up only to meet Mitch Brown already there!
Here is Mitch showing off her elephant jacket.
Several other elephant collectors attended and each brought elephants and stories to
tell. I imaged over 100 elephant collectibles; they will find their way into the
Eveything Elephants: A Collector's Pictorial Encyclopedia project and several will go into
volume 2 of the print Encyclopedia being worked on now.
Sunday, 1/20/03:
Terese and I went to Manadaly Bay to attend the Shark aquarium exhibit. it
was quite an experience
As we left the exhibit, Terese noticed that the glass doors had elephants on the door
handles. These were custom made metal castings and cost almost $900 a pair! ->>>
We left Mandalay Bay and went to the Rio for brunch. As we were walking through
the building, I noticed two large wooden elephants standing near an the
Gaylord Indian Restaurant . The manager, Deena, said they were antiques about 170 years
old. ->>>
These are about 4 feet high and 5 feet long!
Does anyone know the significance of the double tusks?
We also went to the Markman Galleries, where several artists have elephant items. I do not
yet have permission to use the images in the book; but they are expected to call me when
they talk to the artist. I will post a few images as I process them.
